SUMMARY of the Experience Discussion Group "Learning from Near-Accidents"

The moderator of the Experience Discussion Group calls three to five members of staff together for at least half an hour to collate near-accidents, examine them more closely and to jointly draw up suggestions for solutions and measures. With the instructions on how to chair such meetings (available on Internet or from ordering address), the moderator can evaluate near-accidents with colleagues and staff in a structured and systematic manner and make such hazards more obvious. The moderator can be someone appointed for this purpose from the company, be it the Quality Co-ordinator, a Works Council Member, the Safety Representative or the Occupational Health Experts or other interested persons.
It is up to the company how often the Experience Discussion Groups take place. All staff should take part in an Experience Discussion Group once every one to two years so that they can make their contributions to work safety and quality assurance. It is a continuous learning process: e.g., the discussion group meets regularily, it draws up an experience poster, which is put up on the notice board for all staff to see and passed on to the Occupational Health Experts, who deals with it when reviewing conditions at work.
