Owners of Austrian Companies Commenting on the Benefit of the "Learning from Near-Accidents" Campaign (Summarised):

Owner of a structural steel company, 70 staff
I want my staff to see that safety is important to me. I want them to say, “It isn't just all words, he really does something about it.” Accidents cause major loss to businesses as well as the national economy. An employee who is off sick means I am one short and that costs me money. We've still got to get the work done. That's why I have an interest in making sure my staff don't have accidents and are absent as little as possible. If everyone does his bit, a lot can be achieved in the end.

Owner of a mechanical engineering company, 21 staff
The problem with near-accidents is that something only almost happened. This means that people don't speak about them, and you don't know about them if you didn't happen to be there. However, it's interesting to see why nothing really happened or how this near-accident occurred. You can then draw conclusions how to make processes and procedures safer.

Owner of a plumbing and roofing company, 43 staff
We do an awful lot for safety and are a modern company. Our motto is: we ought to learn wherever possible. If we stopped further training, that would be a step backwards. This project is a challenge for us. This initial survey has already shown us what we will bear in mind in future.

I know of many near-accidents and am unhappy that we have not only had a number of minor and more serious accidents but also a fatal one. We are therefore extremely sensitive in this regard. But during this project I've become aware that we've had far more near-accidents than I knew about.

Owner of a plumbing and roofing company, 39 staff
It's enough when something happens to an employee that will mark him for the rest of his life. Unfortunately we often have the problem of staff overestimating themselves. We're always having to urge them to comply with the safety regulations even if this increases costs. The most important resource is our staff. I can buy machines at any time.

Managing director of a company manufacturing window frames, 33 staff in production
We expect benefit from this project: it includes several companies from whom we can learn something. We, the management, will learn about more near-accidents than we know at present. Informing staff about the repercussions of accidents and involving them in such projects is extremely important: this is how you can nip dangerous tendencies in the bud.

Senior partner of a locksmith's shop, 11 staff
Any accident which can be avoided has a positive effect on our cost-benefit calculations. People don't generally act until after an accident. I think it's great that we're already examining near-accidents and looking in advance to see where something might happen.
